Team Strengths

Team Strengths

A popular exercise where participants take it in turns to nominate each other for strengths and traits that are useful to the team, giving examples where possible. It’s extremely motivating to be recognised for your strengths in the presence of peers.

Teams also discover the diversity of strengths at their disposal, opening up possibilities for future creative partnerships or complementing big-picture creative thinking with dot-joining and decision making.

In Detail

The aim here is to surface the unique traits, styles and contributions that make the team tick. We ask each person to reflect on what they admire or appreciate in their colleagues - what qualities they’ve noticed, and how those strengths have helped the team succeed.

We usually run this as a round-robin, where each person takes a turn in the spotlight, hearing from others what strengths they see. But we also offer a more flexible option: participants write short appreciation notes for each other, or pair up to swap feedback privately, depending on the team’s preference for sharing.

Some teams prefer a quieter, written format; others thrive on open group discussion. We adapt accordingly.

To support the process, we offer a curated list of example strengths, covering everything from deep listening and clear thinking to curiosity, perseverance and humour. These serve as prompts to spark richer feedback, leaving room for people to add their own.

This activity is far more than a feel-good moment. It creates a shared language of strengths, encourages mutual respect, and uncovers opportunities for collaboration.

It also helps teams spot where their talents overlap, and where complementary pairings could make them even more effective. The outcome? Greater appreciation, stronger bonds, and a clearer understanding of how to play to your collective strengths.
