We'll cover examples including how language-learning company Duolingo has used GPT to create new features in its app.

We'll explore how GPT can generate innovative and creative ideas from simple prompts. We'll demonstrate how GPT can be used to create new ideas, and how it can expand upon existing ideas. Participants will work in pairs or small groups, getting hands-on with GPT to generate ideas and testing its capabilities.

We'll look closely at the tasks GPT might perform for a team or individual to help with their processes and operations. Participants identify specific areas where they can use GPT in their work and develop an action plan to incorporate GPT into their workflow.

Alternate Uses

The Alternate Uses Test asks us to think of as many uses as possible for a simple object, like a brick or a paperclip. The test is usually time-constrained. It measures divergent thinking, in that it is looking for as many ideas as possible.

Many creative thinkers get their results by connecting existing concepts together to create something original. Here we try this systematically with ideas generated so far. How can the aspects of one idea merge with or be added to the aspects of another idea?

How Might We... is a way of starting a question to kick-start a discussion. The open-ended, optimistic phrasing is designed to encourage broad thinking. This technique was developed at P&G in the 1970s, and it has been used and promoted extensively by the design company IDEO.

Zooming Out

Sometimes we can miss things that are happening around us, because we are too focused on our own actions and activities. By zooming out, we can take a wide-angle, helicopter view to consider the context and industry we operate in.

Mirror Test

Put yourself in the shoes of your competitor, or your opposite number. If you were them, and imagine they know everything about you and your weaknesses. What would they do with that information? How would they capitalise?

Constraints

Constraints are often the source of our best ideas. Think of Twitter's 140 character limit, or the 18 minute limit for TED Talks. We invite participants to write a list of all the constraints on a current project, then make them worse or introduce more severe constraints to force more radical, ambitious approaches. What new ideas does this provoke?

Problem Swap

Participants think of a current problem they are experiencing in their work. They then pair with another participant and swap problems. How would each solve the other’s problem?

Beginner's Mind

We can sometimes be weighed down by the "curse of knowledge", believing we know everything about a role or problem. Instead, tap into the beginner's mindset by imagining today is your first day in your current role. How would the new you approach things differently?

Hurried Handover

This activity challenges participants to provide a five-minute handover to an imaginary successor on the key responsibilities and actions of their job - revealing their methods and priorities. It's fast-paced and often very revealing.

Perspectives

Looking at a problem from different angles or vantage points can change how it is perceived and interpreted. This might mean taking on a different persona, or changing your thinking style slightly. We can use an "Empathy Mapping" template and a "Personality Swap" worksheet to help with this.

We pair more experienced participants up with those just starting out, for a spot of reverse mentoring - each taking turns to coach and advise the other. The experts can guide the newbies, who in turn can provide fresh perspectives.
