Personal Values

Explore your personal values and what drives you.

This activity comes with a pre-workshop worksheet for participants to fill in, to help them understand and explore their personal values - highly informative in terms of how we work and relate to others. Participants engage in small group conversations where they compare and contrast their personal values with those of others. We then go around the group and discuss insights from the exercise, noting common themes and potential action points.

A little more detail.

Shared values help us work together effectively. The values you all share as a work group drive your strategy, keeping you on track as a business. They inform company policy and processes, and attract others who share your values. They help you and your employees make better decisions, and ensure your company is acting as a whole, with common goals. You also have personal values, expressed through personal behaviours. These behaviours are a reflection of your beliefs and principles, and they guide your decision-making and actions. Identifying your personal values can help you better understand yourself and make choices that align with your beliefs. Some personal values that are linked to trust include honesty, reliability, and loyalty. When these values are important to you, you may prioritise building and maintaining strong relationships with others. You may also make it a priority to keep your promises and hold yourself accountable for your actions. Additionally, you may place a high value on transparency and open communication in your personal and professional relationships. Values can help us build better relationships and teams by providing a shared sense of purpose and direction. When we work with others who share our values, we are more likely to feel fulfilled and motivated in our work. Additionally, understanding and respecting the values of those around us can help us build stronger and more positive relationships both personally and professionally.

Facilitation notes

How to run it.

When to use it

Use Personal Values to help people understand and share what really matters to them. A short pre-work worksheet feeds into small-group conversations comparing values, which builds mutual understanding, trust and rapport across a team.

Use it when

  • A team wants to build trust by understanding each other better.
  • People have never articulated their own values explicitly.
  • You want a foundation of self-awareness before deeper work.

Not the right tool when

  • The focus is the team's shared values rather than personal ones. Use Work Values.
  • You want to see how strengths show up day to day. Use Strengths Consequences.
