Defining the values for an electronics business reshaping its industry.

Smartkem, a semiconductor business reshaping electronics through a new generation of displays, sensors, and logic, wanted a set of corporate values and behaviours that would carry the culture as the company scaled. We used the Define Your Values Toolkit to take the leadership group through a structured process from personal values to organisational behaviours.

Smartkem is seeking to reshape the world of electronics with a revolutionary semiconductor platform that enables a new generation of displays, sensors and logic.

They also wanted to build a great company culture, and as part of that, a compelling set of corporate values.

We used our Define Your Values Toolkit to help them create a set of values and behaviours that would suit their culture and purpose.

This practical toolkit includes guides, examples and tools to help you define and implement a solid set of corporate values with your team.

We guided Smartkem step-by-step through a process to:

  • Learn about values and how they benefit organisations, by examining relevant case studies and examples
  • Identify and discuss their own personal values and how they guide their decisions and behaviours
  • Formulate a set of values relevant to their organisation
  • Decide and plan practical steps for introducing them to wider teams
As a business, we wanted to come together to define our values - not what we did, but how we wanted to do it. From the minute I spoke to James, he came across as an expert who was incredibly knowledgeable and wanted to understand our business and objectives so he could get the very best out of us. We agreed a plan, and James clearly talked through how the workshop would be delivered. The workshop was ran exceptionally well and James tailored his approach to ensure everyone was heard - from Physicists to HR!

HR Director

From Kath Pallas, HR Director: "Really enjoyed the session and I hope you did too. We cannot recommend you highly enough."

"We’ve had several workshops since our session to talk about how we will live and breathe our vales which has resulted in some process changes etc. We’re also creating Values champions and a reward and recognition scheme based around the 5 values and measures. We’ve had lots of art work created and merchandise. I’m now looking to introduce them into our check-in process too."

The most useful thing about a structured values process is that it forces the team to separate what they say they value from how they actually behave when nobody is watching. Without that separation, values become wall posters. With it, they become behavioural anchors people can hold each other to.

Smartkem moved from the workshop into activation faster than most teams. Values champions, a reward and recognition scheme tied to the five values, artwork and merchandise, and integration into the check-in process. The lesson I am carrying forward: a values workshop only earns its keep when it is paired with a clear activation plan that names champions and ties the values to existing operating practices.

LET'S TALK

If this sounds familiar, the first step is a conversation.

Most work like this starts with a 30-minute call to understand the team, the context, and what good would look like. From there we agree the shape of the work together.
